WHAT ARE THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?

What Are the Gifts of the Holy Spirit?

A Revival-Teaching Expose for Believers Who Hunger for Growth. If you’ve ever felt alone in the church, wondering if you truly matter, if God has designed you for something supernatural, something that shifts lives, you and I are kindred. Maybe you’ve watched others prophesy, heal, speak in tongues, or walk in bold faith, and thought: “Could that be me?” Or maybe you’ve served quietly, feeling your service small, yet suspecting there is more of God waiting to burst. This post is for you. Because you are not an idle branch; you are not a spectator. God has poured out gifts through His Holy Spirit into you for edification, for witness, for power. And I believe today, like a revival wind, you will see more clearly what those gifts are, why they matter, and how to step into them.

Introduction

In the King James Version (KJV), the Gifts of the Holy Spirit are glimpsed primarily in 1 Corinthians 12:1-11, where Paul unpacks supernatural endowments given by the Spirit. These “gifts” (Greek charismata) are grace gifts or abilities that are not earned, but given. They are different from natural talents, different from our personality traits; they are supernatural enablements designed to build up the Body of Christ. Right now, we’ll examine what the Bible actually says, exploring the terms, the truths, the dangers, and the glorious possibilities.

The Nine Gifts According to 1 Corinthians 12:8–10 (KJV)Paul, speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, lists nine spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10. Each is distinct, yet all come from the same Spirit, for the same purpose: the common good, the building up of the Church. (1 Cor 12:7 KJV) Below are the nine (9) gifts of the Holy Spirit and their meanings.

Word of Wisdom

This is a supernatural ability to discern God’s perfect will in a situation and apply that insight with accuracy, wise action that could not have come by mere human reasoning. You can see it as God’s practical map for a thorny situation, how to act, when to wait, what words to speak when human solutions are blind or dangerous. “Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it.” – 1 Kings 3:25 (Solomon’s judgment) In 1 Kings chapter 3, two mothers claimed the same baby. Solomon, moved by God’s wisdom, proposed to cut the child in two. But the true mother’s reaction exposed her love and saved the child. That decision showed supernatural discernment applied as judgment and mercy. How to steward & cultivate it: Pray for discernment before decisions. Read Scripture; wisdom is married to Word-knowledge. Practice listening, silence first, counsel second. Seek confirmation from mature believers and test by Scripture. Warning: False wisdom often sounds clever, expedient, or politically correct. Always weigh counsel against Scripture and the fruit it produces. Wisdom without meekness or love becomes manipulation.

Word of Knowledge

The word of knowledge is a supernatural disclosure of specific factual information that the believer could not know by natural means often to meet a hidden need. In other words it is God whispering a fact into your spirit, “She lost her father last year,” “There is cancer here,” “You were abused”, so you can minister precisely where it hurts. “Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.” – John 1:48 (Jesus to Nathanael) In John chapter 1 verse 48 Jesus told Nathanael where he had been before they met. That factual revelation authenticated Jesus and opened Nathanael’s heart. Modern, relatable example: During a counseling time you feel impressed to ask about a childhood loss; and before you the person breaks and begins healing. Or in a visitation you are told an unlikely family name, and that leads to practical help or more words of knowledge. How to steward & cultivate it: Ask God for boldness and compassion when knowledge is given. Use it to point people to Christ, not to satisfy curiosity. Confirm by prayer and, where appropriate, ask the Holy Spirit to lead your words. Pair knowledge with love, knowledge without compassion wounds. Warning: The gift can be misused for gossip, sensationalism, or pride. Never reveal what you’ve been shown to shame someone. If a revelation could harm someone, handle it with great care or bring it to a mature leader first.

Faith (as a gift)

Not merely ordinary faith, but a heroic, spiritual confidence given by the Spirit to believe God for the impossible and to act on that assurance. It’s faith on steroids, steady, a supernatural trust that God will do what He promised, even when evidence says no. “I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.” — Matthew 8:10 (Jesus about the Centurion) In the above scripture a Roman centurion believed Jesus could heal his servant without coming to his house. Jesus marveled at the man’s faith and commended it. That’s faith that trusts God’s word over circumstance. Now imagine someone praying for a job in a desperate season and refuses to panic, keeping worship, giving, and testimony as if the change is already done. Or a missionary who steps into an unreached place believing God for doors to open and that souls would be saved from the claws of satan. How to steward & cultivate it: Spend time in God’s promises, Hebrews 11 is the training ground. Practice faith in small things (a provision, a relational reconciliation) so you can stand in bigger storms. Surround yourself with testimonies of God’s faithfulness. Warning: Gifted faith without humility can become spiritual bravado. Faith must operate in obedience and thanksgiving, not in presumption or a demand that God comply with our timetable.

Gifts of Healings

The plural (Gifts of healings) shows variety, diverse ways the Spirit brings restoration of body, mind, emotion, and spirit according to God’s will. So it’s right to say it’s God’s restorative touch in multiple forms, instant healing, slow recovery, emotional mending, or deliverance, working through people or directly. “And he leaping up stood, and walked….” – Acts 3:8 (Peter and John heal the lame man) In Acts chapter 3, a man crippled from birth was healed at the temple gate. The visible, immediate healing testified to Christ’s power. Warning: Healing is not a formula. Avoid promising instant results as a transaction. Some healings are sovereignly withheld or delayed for reasons we may not understand. False teachers who exploit sickness for money must be rejected.

Working of Miracles

This is about supernatural acts that suspend or override natural order to glorify God, signs that validate God’s message and break entrenched strongholds. It’s a big, undeniable interruption of normalcy, resurrections, deliverance of whole communities, supernatural provision in a crisis. “And they brought forth the sick into the streets… that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.” Acts 5:15 (example of miracles through the apostles) The apostles ministry released mighty acts that confirmed the Gospel and brought many to the Lord. How to steward & cultivate it:  Seek God’s heart for the lost, miracles are often missionary fuel. Live holy and humble; God uses vessels aligned to His glory. Partner miracles with testimony, tell how God moved so others can meet Jesus. Warning: Miracles that entertain rather than lead to repentance can be counterfeit. Don’t measure true ministry by spectacle alone. Also beware of manipulative techniques that stage “miracles” for attention.

Prophecy

The gift of prophecy is speaking what God says, words that bring exhortation, comfort, correction, and direction. Prophecy may foretell, but is most often present application of God’s heart. This gift is not fortune telling; it’s God-telling, addressing situations with God’s voice so people are built up, reproved, or comforted. “And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth.” – Acts 11:28 Agabus foretold a famine. His message had practical consequences and the church prepared and helped others. Prophecy often carries warning and provision. Imagine a scenario in church, where  a prophet warns a congregation about pride before it destroys leadership; or a Prophet visits a grieving family and a prophetic word was released and it brings comfort to a grieving family and brings peace; or a timely reproof that keeps a ministry from falling into compromise. How to steward & cultivate it: Learn Scripture; prophecy that contradicts God’s Word is false. Submit prophetic words to elders and the body for testing (1 Thess. 5:20–21; 1 Cor. 14). Use prophecy to build, not to control. Always season prophecy with love. Warning: Prophecy used for control or to inflate ego is deadly. False prophecies that “tell people what they want to hear” are dangerous. Prophets must be accountable and teachable.

Discerning of Spirits

It is the Spirit-given ability to recognize whether a teaching, a person’s word, or a manifestation comes from God, the human spirit, or a demonic source. It is a spiritual filter; when something looks spiritual but is counterfeit, this gift sees the difference between what is real and what is fake. “Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie…?” – Acts 5:3 (Peter discerns Ananias’s deceit) In the above scripture, Ananias and Sapphira lied about money; Peter by the Spirit of God was able to discern Satan’s work. This discernment protected the church from deceit and hypocrisy. How to steward & cultivate it:  Ground yourself in Scripture; discernment never contradicts the Bible. Pair discernment with mercy, expose sin, then lead to repentance and restoration. Consult wise leaders when confronting serious spiritual deception. Warning: Discernment without love becomes suspicion and Christian paranoia. Also, pride can masquerade as “discernment.” Always check motives and involve others.

Diversities (Different) of Tongues

This is the spiritual enablement to speak in languages or spiritual utterances unknown to the speaker, and such is used for praise, prayer, or sometimes prophecy which often requires interpretation in public. So it can also be seen as a vocal prayer-language for personal edification, worship, or the building of the church when accompanied by interpretation. “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues.” – Acts 2:4 At Pentecost in Acts chapter 2, believers spoke in other languages; and people from many nations heard in their own tongues (language). How to steward & cultivate it: Use tongues for personal edification in private prayer (1 Cor. 14:4). In public gatherings, prioritize interpretation so the church is edified (1 Cor. 14:27–28). Teach about order and humility, tongues are not a badge of holiness. Warning: Tongues without interpretation in public cause confusion. Tongues can become a status symbol or cause division if people compare their experiences. Exercise in love and order.

Interpretation of Tongues

This gift is the ability to translate or make known the meaning of a message spoken in tongues so others may understand and be edified. It’s the bridge when someone prays or prophesies in an unknown language, and another brings the meaning into the common tongue (language) for the whole church. “Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.” – 1 Corinthians 14:13 In 1 Corinthians chapter 14 verse 13, Paul instructed the Corinthians that if tongues are used publicly, someone should interpret so the church can receive instruction, comfort, or conviction. How to steward & cultivate it: Pray for the gift if you desire it, and learn to be humble and obedient in the service of others. In churches, create guidelines so interpretation can be used effectively. Pair interpretation with prophecy and teaching to shepherd the flock wisely. Warning: An “interpretation” that is vague, self-serving, or contradicts Scripture is false. Interpretation must build up, not confuse or manipulate the congregation.

Short Practical Steps for Every Gift (a quick action plan)

Humble yourself, these are grace gifts, not badges. Pray deliberately, ask the Spirit, not your ego. Study Scripture, gifts are tested by the Word. Practice in small groups, learn under trusted leaders. Invite feedback, good stewards submit to accountability. Use gifts to serve, never perform for applause, minister for transformation.

Words To Your Soul: Friend, these gifts are not ornaments or trophies. They are God’s tools to mend, guide, and launch His people. If one of these words awakens something in you, begin gently, ask God for clarity, find a mature believer or elder to walk with you, and ask God to make your gift both accurate and full of love. The Spirit gives freely; your part is to be yielded.

The Purpose of These Gifts Why did God distribute these gifts? They are not ornaments. They are not status symbols. Their purpose is clear in Scripture:

Edification of the Body “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.” (1 Cor 12:7 KJV) The gifts uplift, strengthen, correct, comfort the Church. Unity and Diversity Different gifts, But One Spirit. We need diversity so that no part of the Body is redundant. (1 Cor 12:4-6) Testimony to the World Signs, Miracles, Healing, Prophecy. They point people beyond the seen to the unseen God. Miracles open hearts, but prophecy convicts souls. Growth into Christlikeness. Exercising the gifts refines the believer, humility, dependence, faith, and love. They test motives and produce holiness.

Gifts in Our Time:

Today, in California, in the USA, in your city, these gifts are not relics of apostolic times. As the world spins with uncertainty, governments shifting, moral chaos, sickness, spiritual blind spots, God is raising those who carry gifts. You might see:… Believers speaking with divine wisdom in board meetings or church conversations, turning hearts. “Word of knowledge” breaking chains in someone’s life, past sin, trauma, addictions exposed and healed. Prophetic warnings on nations, movements, exposing corruption. Miracles of healing and deliverance in hospitals, in homes, in slums. Tongues used in private devotion, interpreting for public blessing.

How To Know and Walk In Your Gifts

Let’s be honest, many believers know that the gifts of the Spirit exist, but few ever truly walk in them. They’ve heard about the word of wisdom, prophecy, healing, tongues, yet when it comes to their own life, they’re unsure, hesitant, or even afraid. But God never intended the gifts to remain mysteries locked inside your spirit. They were meant to flow, not to sit still. So the question is, how can you know your spiritual gift, and how do you begin to walk in it with clarity and boldness? Let’s go deep. It Begins With Desire “But covet earnestly the best gifts…” – 1 Corinthians 12:31 (KJV) The first sign that God is stirring a gift within you is desire. Not ambition, not competition, but a holy hunger. When you start feeling drawn toward certain expressions of grace, maybe prayer burdens come often, maybe you sense things before they happen, maybe you feel unusual compassion to heal or help, that’s not coincidence. That’s the Spirit whispering something which needs you to pay attention. Because the spirit is stirring something in you. You can see it as where your desire is often the direction of your gift. Like Moses in the Bible, he desired to see Israel free long before God gave him the rod. David had a heart for worship before he ever wrote the Psalms. Don’t despise the stirrings that make you different from others, they’re clues to your spiritual DNA. Discover Through Relationship, Not Guesswork. “For the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.” – 1 Corinthians 2:10 (KJV)

Your gifts are revealed in the secret place, not in a personality test. The Holy Ghost is the one who knows what’s hidden in you because He’s the One who put it there. When you spend time in fellowship, prayer, worship, and the Word, the Spirit begins to highlight how He wants to express Himself through you. Sometimes, He does it through inner witness (peace, conviction, recurring burden). Other times, through prophetic confirmation or counsel from mature believers who see what you carry before you even realize it. Elisha didn’t beg for double portion, he followed Elijah, and proximity revealed purpose. Relationship unlocks revelation.

Confirmation Comes Through Use

“Neglect not the gift that is in thee…” – 1 Timothy 4:14 (KJV) You’ll never know you can swim until you step into the water. Many believers wait for angelic announcements before they act, but gifts don’t grow by waiting; they grow by use. When you serve, pray, teach, encourage, or lay hands on others, you begin to see what flows easily through you and what bears fruit. That’s your confirmation. Timothy didn’t discover his gift in theory, he discovered it through service under Paul’s mentorship. You will never know the power in your words until you speak them in faith. The gifts are not discovered in silence but in service. Walking in Your Gift Requires Character and Consistency “Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.” – Romans 12:9 (KJV) The anointing may open doors, but character keeps them open. Every gift has a weight, and God will never allow a weight to rest on an unprepared vessel. Before Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream, he interpreted pain in a prison. To walk in your gift, you must learn consistency, prayer when you don’t feel like it, humility when men applaud, patience when results delay. The Spirit’s gifts are like rivers, but rivers need channels. Character forms the channel that allows the river to flow without overflow or waste.

Discern the Season and Setting

“To every thing there is a season…” – Ecclesiastes 3:1 (KJV) Knowing your gift is one thing; knowing when and where to use it is another. Joseph had the gift of interpretation, but when he spoke prematurely to his brothers, it provoked jealousy. Yet when he spoke before Pharaoh, it saved nations. Sometimes God will reveal your gift in a small circle first, a home fellowship, a prayer group, a small act of obedience. Don’t rush for platforms; let your private obedience build your public credibility. When your gift matures, God will create the right environment for it to bless others without destroying you. Be Accountable and Teachable “In the multitude of counselors there is safety.” – Proverbs 11:14 (KJV) The Holy Spirit leads us, yes, but He also confirms through the Body. Make sure you have fathers, pastors, mentors who can guide, correct, and prune your expression. Gifts without accountability become a dangerous tool. Even Apollos, mighty in Scripture, needed Aquila and Priscilla to “expound unto him the way of God more perfectly.” (Acts 18:26) You grow sharper by allowing others to sharpen you. Even fire needs a fireplace. Guard Your Motives and Keep Your Eyes on Jesus “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…” – Hebrews 12:2 (KJV) The purpose of every gift is to glorify Christ and build His body. When your motive shifts from Jesus to self, the flow will dry up, even if the motion continues. It’s possible to perform gifts without presence, but never mistake activity for anointing. True power is sustained when your heart remains yielded. Your focus should never be, “Lord, use me so they’ll know me,” but, “Lord, use me so they’ll find You.” Be Ready for Warfare. Whenever you begin to function in your gifts, expect resistance, internally and externally. Spiritual gifts are weapons, and weapons attract warfare. Paul was followed by a spirit of divination, Jesus was opposed by religious leaders. Your gift will attract both seekers and critics. Don’t let that stop you. When opposition rises, don’t doubt your calling, let it refine your discernment. In this hour of deception, walking in your gift demands both fire and wisdom. Be bold, but stay grounded. Beloved, you are not a mistake. There’s a divine expression of God that can only be seen through you. The gifts of the Spirit are not for pastors alone; they are for every believer carrying the Holy Ghost. If you’ll yield, love, obey, and grow — heaven will find in you a vessel through whom the supernatural can flow naturally. Your gift isn’t sleeping; it’s waiting for your surrender. Let today be the day you say, “Lord, I’m ready. Reveal, refine, and release the grace You’ve placed in me.”

Conclusion: The Still Small Voice

Beloved, the Holy Spirit has placed gifts in you. Maybe right now buried under insecurity, fear, doubt. But like Jeremiah, who heard the call in youth, God has carved His purposes into your bones. You are sculpted for more than surviving, you are shaped for revival. Do not settle for being a pew warmer. Do not settle for seeing others move where you could move. Seek. Yield. Practice. Watch God light what seems dark in you. Let the gifts that are in you, not for show, but for service, shine. “Covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.” (1 Corinthians 12:31, KJV)

May you grow. May your gifts emerge. May your life be a flame that cannot be hidden. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
