But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. (James 1:22).
Becoming a doer of God’s word is one of the best actions that will propel your spiritual growth. A common misconception among believers is the idea that the word of God is to be obeyed. This notion came from the Old Testament, where the Children of Israel were instructed to obey God’s instructions. The Israelites could only obey God’s instructions; they didn’t have to agree with them, but they had to obey.
The word of God begot the believer in Christ Jesus. The believer has in him or her the ability to do the word of God. Apostle Peter said, “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.” (1 Peter 1:23). This was the reason James said, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.” (James 1:22-24).
It is time to act on the word of God. Your mere obedience will not produce the desired results. You must become a participator by acting in faith in accordance with the word of God. What does the word of God say about you? Believe the description of God’s word about you and start acting it out in faith. James said being only a hearer of God’s word amounts to self-deception, and that’s the worst form of deception. When you look in the mirror of God’s word and see yourself, do not let anyone or any situation in life talk you out of it.
